A Guide to Australian Standard Pallet Sizes for Business Freight
Most commercial freight in Australia moves on pallets.
Understanding pallet sizes and how they relate to vehicle capacity helps businesses plan loads, compare transport options and avoid wasted space.
Why Pallet Sizes Matter
Transport capacity is often quoted in pallet spaces.
If pallets are oversized, damaged or inconsistently sized, businesses can pay for space they cannot use.
The Australian Standard Pallet
The Australian standard pallet measures 1165mm x 1165mm.
It is widely used across retail, manufacturing, and food and beverage distribution, and suits the Australian transport and racking environment.
Other Common Pallet Sizes
Businesses may also encounter:
- 1200mm x 1000mm pallets, commonly used for export
- 1200mm x 800mm pallets, the European standard
- Custom or specialist pallets built for specific equipment
Confirming pallet sizes with your logistics provider helps ensure the right vehicle is allocated.
How Many Pallets Fit on a Truck
Vehicle capacity varies by truck type. Common configurations include:
- Smaller vehicles for local deliveries
- 6 to 8 pallet capacity trucks
- 10 to 14 pallet capacity trucks
- Larger combinations for high-volume or interstate freight
Matching load size to vehicle capacity can improve transport efficiency.
Pallet Condition Matters
Damaged pallets can create safety risks and handling problems.
Before dispatch, check that pallets are:
- Structurally sound
- Free of protruding nails or splinters
- Dry and clean
- Suitable for the load weight
Stacking and Securing Palletised Freight
- Stack cartons squarely with no overhang
- Keep loads stable and evenly balanced
- Shrink wrap or strap the load securely
- Place heavier cartons toward the bottom
Planning Palletised Transport
Provide your logistics provider with pallet counts, weights, dimensions and delivery locations so a suitable vehicle can be arranged.
